Hall of Fame Plaque Information

Judy Morey's entire life has centered around athletics. While in high school, winter athletics where very popular and Judy was determined to be included in activities. She was the only female for some time.

After graduation, Judy enrolled at LaCrosse State College where she majored in physical education. After briefly teaching in New London, she was offered a position at I-S in 1963. Her students were all female and Judy had the opportunity to teach them "how to play in athletics-in other words, coach them."

The students and athletes of Iola-Scandinavia most likely describe her as a successful and devoted teacher and coach. What they don't know is how instrumental Judy was in developing the very athletic programs in which they participated.

Coach Morey's athletes compliled an astonishing record of 309 wins and only 76 losses. She watched her players win nine conference championships, two invitational holiday tournaments, and eight regional and two sectional WIAA tournaments. In 1977, her girls won the state tournament, having been runner-up the year before. Judy retired in 1991.

For 16 years, Judy was a member of the WBCA. In 1980, she was voted Kellogg's Coach of the Year. Judy also coached volleyball, softball and track and field. She never coached for the sake of winning. Instead, Judy's expected her players to try their best. The following is a poem which she always posted following games.

I care not if we keep time or score,

I care not if they come to watch,

I care not if our uniform is Black or White,

I care only for the execution and the thrill of doing,

and being what as I create it and it creates me..

It is only she who grows, who wins, and only she,

who fails to meet herself or the other, that loses.
