You can cut up old Cd-ROMs with a coping saw, a hack saw or those super shears that cut through just about anything. However, using the shears, you may not get the exact cut you want, as the compact disks are rather brittle. Sheryl Davis aka Postoid Artist DebutARTe@aol.com
I worked for a bookstore that was going to throw out all the freebie CD's music companies sent & no coworkers even wanted for free! So I took a few for stamping & mail art. I've gotten some really cool textures by heat embossing. I want to try to send one thru the mail. anno azanders@ix.netcom.com
they go through the mail.. just slap 55 cents postage on `em and an address label.. they may show up in a body bag, but they'll go.. postoids@artlover.com
I have cut them up and used them as sturdy wee-book covers. Try experimenting with them by stamping, embossing, heating and bending, or cut up, heat and curl the edges. Makes interesting bead accents and if broken up, the pieces look neat in a collage or when imbedded in black acrylic paint to look like grouted items. You can even add translucent glass stain to them! Have fun! Jeff Hitchin santa@gonzo.wolfenet.com
I just tried this tonight with some success. I'd gotten a few of the free AOL CD-ROMS in the mail, and hated just throwing them out, but I was never going to use them. So what I did was brayer some clear embossing powder on the label side, then sprinkle gold embossing powder on it, and melt with a heat gun. The CD may warp a bit, so watch it. After the initial coating, I had to go over this with a gold Colorbox Cat's Eye to pick up the edges and a few trouble spots. Then re-emboss with gold so that you have a full covering of gold. I did stamp some letters in black on top of that embossed with clear (which was difficult since the clear powder adhered to the gold in places, but it's clear so it didn't matter all that much), and voila, a gold record! It would make a good background for a collage piece where it's used as the backing. It's a bit tricky, but the effect is nice, and I suppose you can ever try sending it as a TTPO, though I didn't this time as I had to pack it with other materials to send to someone. Anyway, it's a cute trick and I thought I'd share... Tammy tmbr@techline.com
I use my old CD's on my christmas tree! I made a year round pole, wrapped in fake greenery, added a few floral garlands, and white light, and I hand my CD's on this tree.....I call it my seedy tree. Everyone who see's my stampin room gets a kick out of it. Christine L. Cox christine@coxes.com
I have a bunch (50 or so) of old CD-ROMs. My DH and I are going to make a huge (a'la Calder) mobile for my office! Jackie Norris jnorris@linknet.kitsap.lib.wa.us
I have been saving them with the idea of using them to decorate an outside Christmas tree. Ya, know, run a string or cord through the hole. I think they would be really pretty. S Reynolds reynolds@pacifier.com
My teenaged son made some clocks out of old CDs as Christmas gifts for his grandads. He used the battery-operated clockworks you can find at the craft store (for ¼ inch thickness, I think it was). Didn't put any numbers on the face, but you easily could. He used small plate stands to hold `em. Kind of a novelty for a desk or office area. The grandpas were impressed Melinda Mourning ccmm@Augustana.edu
I used a lot of old CD's that we get with software on them at christmas this year. I make angels & snowment out of cloth and stuffing and use the cd as a base. They stand up perfectly using them. I attach the CD to the fabric with Miracle tape and then put a couple of strips of miracle tape on the top to stick a mound of stuffing on. These work a lot better than using cardboard or poster board and they are free! Leslie Callahan Ryan lcallaha@tuc.com
If they're impervious to weather, these would look great on an outdoor tree also, spinning around reflecting christmas lites at nite and sunlight during the day. |
