Iridescent Accents
Author: Tyra L. Smith
(Manufacturer:  Salis International/Dr. P.h. Martins  http://www.docmartins.com/index2.asp)

This is a shimmery paint line from Dr. P.h. Martin which comes in 12 separate colors. They are sold ndividually, 1/4 ounce jars for $3.49 each or in a 12 color set, 1/4 ounce per jars for about $42.

These paints are quite thick, about the consistency of Elmer's glue. There may be a slight glycerin content, but it was not noticeable at all. These paints have a good lightfast rating.

Iridescent Accents will air dry on almost any type of surface, including but not limited to: matte and glossy cardstocks, vellums of any brand, wood, fired ceramic pieces, porcelain, etc..

They did not air dry on: glass, transparencies or vinyl. However, you can also use clear embossing powder as a sealant if need be.

The colors can be mixed without muddying to create custom colors. You can tint them with dye ink re-inkers, markers, powdered pigments or any water based type paint.

The paints may be thinned with water to create a light shimmery wash. The "shimmer" remains mixed and equally suspended when thinned with water.

I found that the shimmer somehow increases when the paints are slightly thinned with water. To accomplish this, I use a waterbrush with only water in the reservoir, wipe the brush in the lid to pick up the paint and then painted on cardstock. This works equally well on matte, glossy and vellum. I was surprised to find that the vellum did not buckle with the addition of water from the waterbrush.

One very unique thing about the Iridescent Accents is that they hold their color VERY WELL on black/dark cardstocks. Quite surprising and NICE !!!!

Another "unique" feature of this paint is that somehow, there is a really nice soft sheen to the paint when it dries which can be seen when you tip the piece from side to side in the light. It IS interesting!!!

When applying a clear liquid sealant on top of artwork painted with these paints, it did not turn cloudy when it dried and I did not loose any shimmer or color after it dried either. Do note that a sealant is NOT necessary at all if you don't want to use one.

I did get brush strokes when painting on glossy cardstock. To over come this, I use my waterbrush and with the small addition of the water from the reservoir, the brush strokes were not a problem.

Iridescent Accents can be used with a wide range of techniques including painting, stippling, brayering, sponging and even finger painting.
