DVD/Fabricadabra Material Magic w/Sandra McCall
Author: Tyra L. Smith
(Manufacturer:  PageSage  http://www.pagesage.com/)

This is another wonderfully educational dvd created by PageSage. It is an inspiration-filled 125 minutes long, jam-packed with projects and ideas. This is the third dvd that PageSage has created and its just as delightful and informative as the first two.

“Fabricadabra Material Magic” focuses on the use of various art and craft products to create a wide range of textile/fabric projects. You are taught everything from creating flat sheets of decorated muslin to the basics of creating jewelry and even purses/satchels using the same muslin. Velvet is also used in various projects and you are also taught to decorate pre-made articles of clothing. Sandra McCall does an outstanding job as she teaches you how to create a wide range of projects. Standard art and craft matierals are used, and when she refers to a product you may not be familiar with (which doesn’t happen often), it is explained in detail and easily understood. While Sandra uses standard art and craft supplies, when applicable she does give an idea of alternative supplies that can be used. The projects created during the length of the dvd are simple, yet they ignite the imagination and it is easily understood how a person can take the main idea and expand on it for other projects you may have in mind. The basics are taught superbly. I am looking forward to taking what I learned on this dvd and applying it to some quilting projects I have in mind!

Sandra also teaches basic jewelry making skills in this dvd. I learned how to make my own jump rings and I also learned how to solder. She makes using wire to create jewelry as uncomplicated as it can possibly be and I learned a great deal from it. The products and tools used are explained in detail and the basic technique is taught in a very simple and uncomplicated manner. It really opened up the doors to my imagination and I want to work on creating some jewelry pieces using the skills Sandra teaches on this dvd.

One thing I personally enjoyed about the dvd is that Sandra is what I would call a “stamper’s stamper”. She is very down to earth and has no problem explaining detailed instructions in a way that every artist of any level of experience can understand. She even gets her hands dirty!!! I loved that! I too use my hands “as tools” and don’t have a problem getting them dirty or stained. Sandra has some great tips and advice as well…but you’ll have to buy the dvd to find out what they are!

This is a GREAT entry level dvd for anyone who’s ever given consideration to working with fabrics. The topics covered are:

Painted Muslin
Tiny Tomes (small books)
Fabric Beads
Simply Satchels (small purses)
Fabric Charms
Velvet Scarves
Embellished Ensemble (clothing)

As always, the gallery and tips section of the dvd are well developed and totally interactive with the rest of the dvd. At a price of $29.95 U.S. funds….this is a deal that’s hard to beat! I consider it to be a valuable addition to my reference materials library!
