Techniques - Making Envelopes

There are many types and sizes of template envelopes available for purchase on the market. The standard sized envelope which fits your standard A2 size card is called an "A2" envelope.

For instructions on cutting cardstock into standard "A2" size cards, see the "Cutting Cardstock" section of the Newbie Center.

To get a good envelope template for this size card, take one of your purchased envelopes and gently take it apart and fold it flat. If needed, a little steam on the glued edges will help to ease them apart. Now, flatten it out and trace around it on some cardboard and cut it out - this is your template. I prefer to use something called, I think, Quilting Template Plastic which is a sheet of very thin plastic that quilters make templates with. It's available in most stores that carry quiltinig supplies (I find it at both Jo Anne's fabrics, Hancock Fabrics and Michael's). It is easy to cut with scissors too, so it's not hard to use and will last a VERY long time. Or you can make yourself an envelope template using one of your purchased envelopes as the base to trace with and a piece of cardstock or thin cardboard (like from a cereal box).

There are also many wonderful envelope templates available on the Donovan Web Site. Scroll down the page until you see "Envelope Templates". http://www.bydonovan.com/templates.html
